Transitive - Intransitive Verbs

🔹 Transitive Verbs (सकर्मक क्रिया)

transitive verb is a verb that requires an object to complete its meaning.

Structure: Subject + Verb + Object

Examples:

  1. She reads a book.
    वह एक किताब पढ़ती है।
("reads" is a transitive verb – it needs the object "book")

  2. He kicked the ball.
    उसने गेंद को मारा।
("kicked" is a transitive verb – it needs the object "ball")

  3. They ate rice.
    उन्होंने चावल खाए।
("ate" is transitive – object is "rice")

🔹 Intransitive Verbs (अकर्मक क्रिया)

An intransitive verb does not require an object. It makes complete sense by itself.

Structure: Subject + Verb

Examples:

  1. She sleeps.
    वह सोती है।
("sleeps" is intransitive – no object needed)

  2. He runs fast.
    वह तेज दौड़ता है।
("runs" is intransitive – it describes an action, no object)

  3. They laughed loudly.
    वे ज़ोर से हँसे।
("laughed" is intransitive – no object)

🧠 Quick Tip to Identify:

  • Ask: "What?" or "Whom?" after the verb.

    • If the answer exists → Transitive

    • If no answer → Intransitive

Example:
He plays cricket. (Plays what? – cricket → Transitive)
He plays well. (Plays what? – no answer → Intransitive).
